![]() This could well be your case but unless you check, you can't know if stuff is tied together up in the box. Especially for those of us installing fans where there was previously just a light fixture and thus only one switch, the remote is critical. In lighting, sometimes they will run the hot to the box over the light and on to other fixtures and then run just the hot wire down to the switch and back. White is neutral and green or bare is ground. The reason the multiple blacks are tied together is because they are feeding other fixtures out of it. ![]() Often they do use this for ceiling fans because it saves needing to run two separate cables. If you use two circuit romex, you will have a black and a red wire. If your new ceiling fan has a light, a red wire from a second switch in the same wall box can provide switched power to the fans light. Most often in typical split phase residential, you will see all black or some black and some red. Put new fan together then put wiring together, turned power on then switched on light and breaker trip right away, checked wires to make sure white w/ white black/blue with black, and green to green, they where, so took them apart reconnected them, tripped again, flipped wires just in case tripped breaker, removed fan, put old fan up worked just fine, put new fan up again tripped again, took back to store got new fan put new fan all together same problem again and again, put up a new light. In a three phase system which would be pretty rare in a house, each would be a different phase. You also should mess with the wires until you are sure you know we're they all go.īlack, red and blue typically can be used for hot in 120volt electrical systems. Really, without someone seeing the situation, it's impossible to give real advice, but as BostonMike7 said, you should check to be sure. If you don't know what you are talking about, just don't give advice. This would make sense for a ceiling fan with a light controlled by a wall switch and the fan controlled by a chain pull.ĭon't listen to these responses. Often red is a switched hot where black is unswitched hot.
